Learn more about Malia

The Municipality of Hersonissos is an area that truly has something to keep everyone happy! Beaches, history, sports, nightlife and tradition. Malia town offers a small maze of traditional streets in the old village to explore, with hidden gems in terms of taverns, bars and shops. As one walks towards the lush sandy beaches of the area, the nightlife scene emerges with chic cocktail bars and the occasional nightclub for those wanting to catch the next sunrise. From a historical aspect, Malia’s many little churches offer insight into recent history while the famous Minoan Palace of Sarpidon, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete and home to the ‘bee’ pendant. Stalis has almost joined its borders with Malia but is the more calming sibling. A long stretch of shops, restaurants and bars running alongside the beachfront offer the perfect setting for those evening strolls.

Hersonissos is home to the Lychnostatis museum for those interested in taking a peak into local culture and the traditional lifestyle. In the vicinity, one can also find extreme sports available and large rave parties organised at different times throughout the summer season. The majority of Hersonissos town is modern with a wide variety of shops all along the long stretch of the main road. Walking along the seafront can be preferable and at the end, one finds the port with a minuscule white church overlooking the fishing boats. During Greek Orthodox Easter is a great time to see the port come to life with locals attending to pay their respects. The more traditional feel of a village can be found just above Hersonissos, in Piskopiano and Koutouloufari villages. These are both just a short – yet, uphill – walk from the main street.
