The second largest city of the island is Chania, situated approx. 144km from Heraklion. Chania also possesses an international airport and a large port but the city is most well known for its romantic atmosphere – a frequent destination for wedding photography and honeymoons. The old town is a maze of colourful streets, eclectic shops and a mixture of Turkish and Venetian architecture which surrounds the old harbour. Overlooking the main part of the harbour and the lighthouse, is the Maritime museum with the prestigious anchor situated by the entrance. A short drive up to the graves of Venizelos family will offer you a stunning view of the entire city and if one is feeling a little more adventurous, Stavros beach (where Zorbas the Greek was filmed), is a great location to chill, soak up the sun and lose oneself in the turquoise blue sea. In the vicinity of Chania, those looking for a more active holiday can challenge themselves to walk Samaria Gorge while those seeking to relax, can venture to Balos islet or Elafonissi (pink beach).
Midway between Heraklion and Hania, lies Rethymnon city. Many characterise Rethymnon as a mini-Chania but this town has its own unique charm. The new part of town is a continuation of the old and at the end, a small harbour is home to fishing boats and the taverns serving the fresh fish and seafood. Being a student-city, there is a youthful energy to Rethymnon with lots of small taverns (ouzeries) serving mezes and hosting long inter-table debates and discussions until the early hours of the morning. Rethymnon beaches are long and sandy but they are also homes to loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) who come here to create nests and lay their eggs. From a historical perspective, the most interesting landmark in this area, is Arkadi Monastery with a tragic tale and true importance in the Cretan revolution against the Ottomans in 1866. Venturing to the south coast is also a great option to travel through the Kourtaliotiko gorge and to Plakias seaside village for the day – a mere 45-60 min drive.

Between Rethymnon and Heraklion city, one finds the resort areas of Bali (53km from Heraklion) and Agia Pelagia (21km from Heraklion). Both are seaside resorts, predominantly for visitors, with few residents remaining throughout the year. A selection of luxurious hotels and smaller apartments, restaurants and bars and some of the finest beaches decorate these small villages. Agia Pelagia (formerly known as the settlement of Achlada) was very important strategically when Heraklion was occupied by the Venetians, as its port served to help the besieged Cretans. Bali on the other hand, is a very new and upcoming area. Both are ideal for guests who wish to relax and enjoy the sun and sea, without needing to plan ahead or wanting to explore the entire island within a week.
Most of these areas could be reached by bus, coach or hitch hiking but why have the trouble, expense and restrictions? Holidays are about relaxing and making the most of the time you have.
